Original title: Stuck on "Shutting Down..."
Yesterday when I shut my computer down it got stuck on the "Shutting Down..." screen. It stayed here for 4-5 minutes before I manually shut it down. The normal shut down time is around 10-20 seconds.
I have read other threads about similar problems, but on those this occured on every shutdown. This has just happened to me once. I have shut it down 2-3 times since to see if it happens again and it has not.
Does anybody know what might cause this? Is this something to worry about or was it most likely an isolated experience?

Please check these and more general methods in the next message.
Check your antivirus/antispyware/security programs which are often the cause for this issue.
Among
many problems they can be checking removable drives on shutdown which will hang the machine.
Best to remove the ones you are using if you suspect them and to test by using others.
See the
recommendations below to use to test, even better permanently.

Uninstall them and run their maker's Removal Tools and/or special instructions to prevent remnants
from being left behind which can cause strange errors.

Here is what I use and recommend : (These are all Free versions and very effective.)
Avast and Prevx have proven extremely reliable and compatible with everything I have
thrown at them.
Microsoft Security Essentials and Prevx have also proven to be very
reliable and compatible.
Use MSE and Prevx or Avast and Prevx however not all 3.

Avast Home Free - stop any shields you do not need except leave Standard, Web, and
Network running.
Prevx - Home - Free
Windows Firewall
Windows Defender (not needed if using MSE)
IE - Protected Mode
IE 8 - SmartScreen Filter ON (IE 7 Phishing Filter)
I also have IE to always start with InPrivate Filter active if IE 8.
(You occasionally have to turn it temporarily off with the little Icon on LEFT of the + bottom
right of IE)

Two versions of Avast are available 5.x and 4.8x

Avast 5.x - Home - Free - Stop the Shields you do not use (except File, Web, Network, &
Behavior) - double click the Orange Icon in Notification Area - Real Time Shields - click the
Shield you want to stop - STOP.
To stop the Orange Icon from showing an error indicator -
click the Orange Icon - Upper Right - Settings - click Status Bar - uncheck the Shields you
disabled - click OK

If you ever suspect malware, and that
would be unsual with Avast and Prevx running except for an occasional low level cookie
(no big deal), UPDATE it and then run it as a scanner.
I have many scanners and they
never find anything of note since I started using this setup.

This particular error can easily be resolved with a few simple steps. However, if you are not confident in your ability to use the methods below or they do not fully remove the issue on your computer, you may want to seek the assistance of a qualified repair technician who is well versed in fixing CPU freezes while shutting down.

Back-up the Registry of your operating system.
Find the Registry Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade]
Note: this Registry Key should already exist, if it does not exist, create it.
Create a brand new DWORD Value that is named AllowOsUpdate
Set the Value to 0x00000001.
Close and reopen your Control Panel.
Restart the Microsoft Windows.
