All Links to IE8 as my Default Browser have stopped working

I'm running IE 8 in Vista 64 Ultimate...everything was fine for a few months, and now any program that links to IE as my default browser gets an error that the Default Browser can not be found.
In my internet options, IE is chosen as my default, in fact
I have no other browsers.
Can anyone give me a hint as to what to do or where to start.

Thank you for using the Answers Forum.
To ensure no odd settings, reset your defaults.
Go to Start, Default Programs, Set Your Default Programs, choose Internet Explorer from the list and click Set this program as default.
If this is just a recent change, you may also be able to do a System Restore to when it was working.
To do a System Restore, go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, open System Restore and then select a date when Internet Explorer links
worked.
