Cannot dowload adobe acrobat reader onto windows 7 without losing all the home page prompts.

I received a pdf file and when I attempted to open it I got a prompt telliing me I needed to download Adobe Acrobat Reader file.  I download first the 10.1 file and opened my document and read it.  When I closed my AOL page - I use that for email and went
to the computer home screen all the shortcut icons had turned from their normal symbol to the adobe symbol and I could not use the shortcuts to enter their programs.  I removed the acrobat 10.1 from the computer and everything returned to normal.  I tried
the same thing with Adobe 9.
and got the same results.
 
Can anyone tell me how to properly download my computer with adobe acrobat reader 10 or 9.

Adobe Reader is becoming a problem for many users, I personally don't use it anymore, especially for just the simple task of reading a simple PDF file.

Machine Throttling

• Go to the Start button.
• In the Search box, type "regedit" (without quotes) and press Enter.
• Look for the following registry key: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions".
• On the right window pane, delete the subkey: "Machine Throttling".
• Reboot your system.
