registry file failure c0000218 but can't copy file as fix says to do!

Wifes Dell inspiron crashed last weekend with error code above.
Tried to use knowledge base article 307545 to correct using recovery console, but when I type in command to copy the sytem32\config\software to tmp\software.bak I get the error message that
that file cannot be copied.
Should I ignore this and do the rest of the procedure or how can I copy (or get a new file loaded) and continue?
