So far unsolvable and unheard of internet explorer 6 issue.

I've searched the internet, and I can't find anything close to my problem, or any kind of solution.

I'm running internet explorer 6 off my machine.
It came with the windows XP disk I had.
It does not work.
I am currently using firefox to post this message.
Whenever I open it up, it gives me this error:

Cannot find Server

The page cannot be displayed

The page you are looking for is currently unavailable.
The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.


I get the same message for every website I try to go to in internet explorer.
It suggested I try to diagnose the connection problem, which I did, involving restarting the computer twice, but still no success, so I was told to refer to the windows xp support
website, but they have nothing related to my problem.
It's not that internet explorer stops working, freezes, or crashes, it's that it will not connect to any webpages at all.
It's not just internet explorer either.
McAffee routinely on startup asks me to
renew my subscription, offering a link to their webpage.
Within McAffee I get the same error message "this page cannot be displayed".
In Itunes, it tells me I'm not able to connect to the online itunes store to log in.

Before anyone suggests it, I tried downloading internet explorer 8, and that only exacerbated the problem.
Windows live messenger worked fine with internet explorer six, but when I downloaded and intalled 8, I got the same error message whenever I tried to
connect to a webpage, and Windows live would no longer connect.


I have a monthly subscription to comcast high speed internet, and through all this, firefox has continued to work fine, so I'm pretty sure it's not a connection issue, and is rather a software or a system issue.
What could possibly be wrong, and what can I
do to fix it?

Run CHKDSK

• Go to the Start button.
• In the Search box, type "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter.
• At the command prompt, type "chkdsk /r /f" (without quotes) and press Enter.
• Reboot your computer.

An error might pop up:

"Access denied as you do not have significant privileges. You have to invoke this utility in elevated mode."

If you receive the above error message, it means you are not logged into you computer as an Administrator. If that's the case, follow these steps to run the command prompt in elevated mode:

• Go to theStart button.
• Go to "All Programs > Accessories" and right click on "Command Prompt".
• Select "Run as Administrator".
• In the Search box, type "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter.
• At the command prompt, type "chkdsk /r /f" (without quotes) and press Enter.
• Reboot your computer.
