2007 Excel locking and freezing up when copy

I have Microsoft home and student 2007 (windows 7).  When I copy a cell, no formatting involved, the program freezes (not-responding) then unlocks after several minutes ready to paste.  This is happening in all my documents, I tried new documents and the
same hold up.  Additionally I just tried to copy and paste columns of data and some of the data was lost when I pasted it, again no formatting involved.
