Why does Word's insert text cursor sometimes default invisible, not visible?

The "insert text cursor" in Word 2010 flashes between visible and invisible, but its 'default' in some documents is set to invisible, not visible.
 This means that when you use arrow keys to move the cursor, you have to keep stopping and waiting for it
to show up to see if you are on your target, or if you haven't reached it yet or have overshot.
